Trivia of the Day – November 3

Before the creation of electric mixers, a lot of mixing was done by hand.  Based on Pound Cake recipes from 1700’s and early 1800’s, how long does one have to beat the ingredients to get air into the batter?

Mini Anniversary Cake
  1. 15 minutes
  2. 30 minutes
  3. 1 hour
  4. 1 hour 30 minutes

Answer: 3
Based on recipe from The Art of Cookery, Made Plain and Easy by Hannah Glasse, facsimile 1747, one has to beat the ingredients for 1 hour by hand or with a wooden spoon!  That had better been a great cake after it came out of the oven!  Even it was not, I would still heave eaten it and made sure I liked it considering the amount of effort.

Double Tier Rose Cake for an Afternoon Tea

We have not been able to catch up with the Wilsons for quite a while already.  So we invited them over for Afternoon Tea, which is one of my favorite things.  They left the decision of the cake to me which made it very difficult as there are so many good cakes that can be made.  Instead of struggling further, I decided to make my chocolate velvet cake again, but with a twist.  I decided to kick up a notch on the decoration.  So here is what I came up with: a double tier chocolate velvet cake covered with cream cheese frosting, decked with cascading peach color roses.

It was wonderful to get to know the Wilsons better and we hope to have more opportunities of having Afternoon Tea with them.  In regards to the cake?  I think they liked my choice as they took a big piece home with them!

If you would like a one of a kind cake for your next Afternoon Tea time or just because, please feel free to email me at tweetealicious@gmail.com.  Cheers!
